California Chrome works out in prep for next start

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome completed a strong six-furlong workout as he prepares to return to racing later this month in Pennsylvania.

The colt ran six furlongs in 1:10.37 under regular jockey Victor Espinoza at his home track of Los Alamitos on Saturday. Fans gave him a loud ovation.

Trainer Art Sherman calls it “a fantastic work, actually better than I thought it was going to be.”

California Chrome hasn’t raced since finishing in a dead-heat for fourth in the Belmont Stakes on June 7, ending his bid to become racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

The colt is set to make his next start in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20 at Parx.

Sherman says California Chrome will have his final Orange County workout next Saturday before leaving for Bensalem, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 16.

California Chrome has eight wins in 13 career starts and earnings of $3,532,108.
