How Maryland crab fans could win airline tickets

WASHINGTON — Crabs are a summer staple, and your love of the iconic crustacean could win you airline tickets — if you can come up a winning name for Maryland’s blue crab that’s on the state’s Treasure the Chesapeake license plates.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is taking entries for its “Name the Crab Contest.”

More than 1,000 people last year voted to name the blue heron on the Treasure the Chesapeake’s plate. He’s “Wade.”

But the nameless blue crab in the corner of the license plates continues to have an identity crisis.

Two grand prize winners will win a $100 Southwest Airline voucher, a free bay plate, two tickets to the Trust’s Treasure the Chesapeake Celebration gala next May and two tickets to the Kegs and Corks Festival Aug. 23.

You have until July 21 to enter.

Three names will be chosen as finalists and voted on by the public.

One grand prize will be given for the winning name that gets the most votes and one will be randomly selected.

Winners being announced on Aug. 4.

Two runner-up submissions will receive a $50 Amazon.com gift card, a free toclet to the gala and a free ticket to the Kegs and Corks Festival.
