HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Home favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber faces Gastao Elias in the bet-at-home Open second round after the Portuguese qualifier defeated Spain’s Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-3 on Monday.
Seventh-seeded Kohlschreiber, who is looking for his second title on home soil this season after winning in Duesseldorf, received a first-round bye at the clay-court event.
Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic rallied to defeat Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 and set up a second-round clash with defending champion Fabio Fognini. The second-seeded Italian was also granted a first-round bye.
Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan eased past Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan 6-2, 6-2 for a meeting with top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain.
German wild card Tobias Kamke defeated Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and the home fans were given further reason to cheer when Dustin Brown beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Brown next faces another Spaniard, the ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, while Kamke will play Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.
Benoit Paire defeated Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). The Frenchman next faces 11th-seeded Santiago Giraldo of Colombia.
Austria’s Dominic Thiem defeated Czech player Jiri Vesely 7-5, 6-0 for a second-round match with Spain’s eighth-seeded Marcel Granollers, and Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic beat Frenchman Kenny De Schepper 6-3, 6-2 to meet Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.
