RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican congressional candidate Dave Brat’s campaign says it raised $400,000 between May 22 and June 30 with the majority coming from small dollar donors.
The campaign announced its fundraising totals Tuesday, the deadline for filing reports with the Federal Elections Commission.
Brat upset U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a June 10 GOP primary for the Richmond-area congressional district. During that contest, Brat painted Cantor as a Washington insider out of touch with his constituents. Brat said in a statement that the large number of small dollar donors giving to him shows that he is running a grassroots campaign.
Brat will face Democrat Jack Trammell in the November primary. The Trammell campaign, which started in June, says it raised $155,000.
