WASHINGTON — D.C. area college basketball fans rejoice: there’s a brand new non- conference event coming to the area this November, and the inaugural edition looks to be a barnburner.
The Veterans Classic at the Naval Academy, announced on Monday, is a four-team event in Annapolis, Maryland, that will kick off the college basketball season on Friday, Nov. 14. Tennessee will take on VCU at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by Michigan State squaring off with Navy.
Michigan State, Tennessee and VCU were all in the field of 68 for last year’s NCAA Tournament, with the Spartans reaching the Elite Eight and the Volunteers making the Sweet 16.
The event is planned to take place in Annapolis through the 2017 season, with Navy serving as the host and three new teams rotating through each season. The Classic effectively replaces the season-opening games played on aircraft carriers the past few years. Visiting teams will receive tours of the Naval Yard and see what life is like for Naval officers in training, as well as for those who have served.
