NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — More than 800 women in the military are gathering in downtown Norfolk for a leadership symposium focused on challenges that women face.

The Sea Service Leadership Association says the annual event is the single largest gathering of military women, and includes women from every branch of the military.

This year’s symposium addresses topics relevant to women in the military, including career planning, mentorship and leadership development. Topics will also explore challenges faced by servicewomen, including sexual assault prevention, gender policies and personal well-being.

Vice Adm. Michelle Howard told attendees that women leaders are a lot like Western pioneers and that they could learn lessons from them, such as the importance of having a support network.

On Friday, women in each military branch will discuss topics specific to them.
