RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley has added another honor to his long resume.
Yale University awarded Stanley a doctor of music degree at ceremonies in New Haven, Connecticut, this month. The citation accompanying the honorary degree calls Stanley “the patriarch of traditional mountain and bluegrass music.”
It also applauds Stanley for bringing his southwest Virginia musical roots to “the concert halls of the world.”
A bluegrass fan, Yale President Peter Salovey, awarded the honorary degree to Stanley.
Stanley won two Grammys in 2002 for the work that earned him a national following. He won for his role in the album of the year from the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and took home another to southwest Virginia as best male country vocal performance.
