MONACO (AP) — Leading designer Adrian Newey reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull on Thursday amid speculation that Formula One rival Ferrari could try to sign him.
Speculation surfaced at the Spanish Grand Prix that struggling Ferrari might be looking to poach the sport’s most highly-rated technician.
Newey, the designer behind Red Bull’s series of championship-winning cars, did little to quell the speculation in Barcelona, saying “I need to think about it. At some point I am going to have to think about the future.”
However, Newey sought to clarify his position on Thursday, saying in a statement: “I remain committed to Red Bull for the foreseeable future.”
The 55-year-old Newey has a long history of success in the sport, dating back to Williams’ domination in the 1990s.
As the designer behind 10 constructors’ championships, he has won more than anyone else in his role. And only Newey has won titles with three different F1 teams: Williams, McLaren and now Red Bull, which won the drivers’ and constructor’s championships from 2010-2013.
This season has proved more difficult so far for Red Bull, however, with four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel down in fourth place overall after five races and already trailing championship leader Lewis Hamilton by 55 points heading into Sunday’s Monaco GP.
