COMMERCE, Ga. (AP) — Alexis DeJoria topped Funny Car qualifying, and fellow female racer Erica Enders-Stevens led the Pro Stock field Friday in the NHRA Summer Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
DeJoria, the wife of television personality Jesse James and daughter of entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, had a track-record time of 4.012 seconds at 313.95 mph in her Toyota Camry. She won this year in Arizona and Las Vegas.
“Back in the pit, Tommy (DeLago, crew chief) said he was going to try and run something close to a 4.02, and he said if the track calls for it, that’s what we’re going to try for,” DeJoria said. “I was just hoping it would go down the track and run a good number. It was nice and cool out, and the track held it, and I was just amazed when he said a 4.01 over the radio.”
Enders-Stevens, the points leader coming off a victory in the last event in Baytown, Texas, had a 6.530 — also a track record — at 212.59 in a Chevrolet Camaro. She also won this year in Las Vegas.
Steve Torrence took the Top Fuel lead with a 3.765 at 321.50.
Antron Brown was checked and released by emergency services officials after his Matco Tools dragster went out of control and crashed near the finish line. The remainder of the session was canceled because of the extended track cleanup and deteriorating weather conditions.
Eddie Krawiec led the Pro Stock Motorcycle field with a 6.852 at 195.17 on a Harley-Davidson.
