We now have the answer to what will fill the shuttered M&S Grill restaurant space at the corner of 13th and F streets NW: Mastro’s, an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant new to the Washington region.
Mastro’s had been eyeing the space at 600 13th St. NW since early in 2013, but the deal was held up in June when Scottsdale-based Mastro’s Restaurants LLC was purchased by Landry’s Inc. — a large, Houston-based restaurant group that also owns M&S Grill and its sister concept, McCormick & Schmick’s. Papadopolous Properties represented Mastro’s in the deal.
M&S Grill closed in May. Mastro’s will take over the entire space, approximately 12,000 square feet on two levels.
When it opens, Mastro’s will have a few other new steak-and-seafood restaurants in the neighborhood to compete with. Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab opened last month at 740 15th St. NW. San Francisco-based seafood restaurant Tadich Grill will open later this year at 1001 Pennsylvania Ave. NW and Del Frisco’s Grille, the more casual version of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, opened in 2012 at 1201 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Texas-based Eddie V’s steakhouse is also looking for space in the Washington region.
Mastro’s bills itself as a high-end steakhouse and seafood restaurant that also features live music and dancing on weekends. Photos on the restaurant group’s website show dark leather chairs and banquettes, rich red curtains and white tablecloths.
I’ve reached out to Mastro’s for more information on the space and the timeline and will update this post when I learn more.
The steakhouse will have a built-in base of customers from the office building above the restaurant; among the tenants in that building will be PriceWaterhouseCoopers, as my colleague, Dan Sernovitz, reported in September.
