WASHINGTON — D.C. businessman Jeffrey Thompson has been charged Monday with two conspiracy offenses stemming from an ongoing investigation into widespread violations of federal campaign laws.
The investigation also has touched on a shadow campaign run on behalf of D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray in 2010.
Thompson faces a federal charge of conspiring to violate federal campaign finance laws and to submit false filings to the Internal Revenue Service. The other is a local charge of conspiring to violate District of Columbia campaign finance laws.
Thompson is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court Monday afternoon.
The filing was in the form of an Information, which is typically filed when a defendant is aware of the charges and that a plea agreement has been reached.
Thompson has reportedly detailed what he knows about the Gray campaign, but the mayor has continued to say he did nothing wrong.
While Gray is not mentioned by name in the documents, they do refer to a candidate for mayor.
Prosecutors have suggested in recent months that Thompson was the architect behind a more than $600,000 shadow campaign for Gray when he ran for the city’s top office in 2010.
