WASHINGTON – Authorities have identified the Rockville, Md. man who died in a fire early Thursday morning in Montgomery County.
He’s Michael Francis Mercurio, 52.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue’s Scott Graham says the apartment fire on the 5200 block of Crossfield Court broke around midnight and took about 10 minutes to extinguish.
When firefighters entered the apartment, they found Mercurio on the floor. He was taken to an area hospital where he died an hour later. No one else sustained injuries in the fire.
In all, 29 units were displaced — in part due to non-working utilities. Investigators are currently working to determine the origin and cause.
Graham says when fire crews arrived there was fire showing from one of the apartment’s balconies.

Thursday’s death comes after a 4-year-old boy died in an apartment fire in Montgomery Village last week.
“This has been an extraordinary couple of weeks for us,” Graham says.
