Fredericksburg police probe officer’s use of Taser (Video)

WASHINGTON – The Fredericksburg Police Department is investigating one of its own after a stun gun incident Saturday night.

“We are currently investigating an officer’s use of a Taser while arresting a subject,” says police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.

Video shot by someone near the scene in downtown Fredricksburg, Va., shows the officer using a stun gun on a man for more than 40 seconds as he lay face down in the street and screamed for it to stop.

Bledsoe says the suspect attempted to flee the scene of a hit-and-run, and the officer was justified in his use of the weapon. The duration of its use, however, is being looked at closely.

“The internal investigation is focusing on whether or not the sustained charge applied by the officer was appropriate,” Bledsoe says.

The officer is on administrative duty as the investigation continues.

The suspect, Lantz Day, 36, was charged with obstruction of justice.
