WASHINGTON – Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., is tops among local colleges and universities in U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the best schools in the nation.
Johns Hopkins is No. 12 in the magazine’s “National University Rankings,” which were published Tuesday. The private university was one of eight colleges in the D.C. region that ranked in the top 100.
Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., achieved the top honor with the No.1 ranking.
Also on the list:
- Georgetown University at No. 20
- University of Virginia at No. 23
- College of William and Mary at No. 32
- George Washington University at No. 52
- University of Maryland-College Park at No. 62
- Virginia Tech at No. 69
- American University at No. 75
The magazine’s list said Harvard University was the No. 2 school in the country with Yale University rounding out the top three. The much-watched list ranks colleges based on selectivity, retention and graduation rates.
Columbia University earned the fourth spot, and Stanford University and the University of Chicago tied for fifth. A three-way tie for No. 7 gave Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania spots on the list.
California Institute of Technology and Dartmouth College tied for the 10th spot.
When it came to the nation’s top public schools, the University of Virginia tied for No. 2 with the University of California-Los Angeles. The University of California-Berkeley took the first spot.
The College of William and Mary came in at No. 6 on the public schools list.
