WASHINGTON — A high-speed car chase through Maryland’s Howard and Montgomery Counties and the District’s Dupont Circle culminated with a takedown in the Northwest D.C. shopping and dining area of Friendship Heights.

Diners and shoppers saw quite a show as dozens of police officers chased a man through both Maryland and the District Friday night. Spectators out and about on along Wisconsin Avenue Friday evening witnessed the spectacle, which included a police helicopter with search lights.

The suspect, identified as Robert Allen Fugate, of Sparrows Point, Md., is in custody after police finally stopped him in Friendship Heights. The chase lasted more than an hour. Fugate was driving a late-model Jeep and apparently kept going on just two rims on the vehicle’s passenger side for part of the chase.

Baltimore County police say the chase began in Towson, Md., where officers tried to stop Fugate, who had an active arrest warrant for three counts of first-degree assault, as well as reckless endangerment, disturbing the peace and hindering passage, according to the Maryland State Police.

WTOP’s Traffic Center tracked the chase from the start. At one point, the chase went past WTOP’s studios on Wisconsin Avenue in NW D.C.
