WASHINGTON – Police are looking for two cars after a drive-by shooting outside a D.C. apartment building early Monday sent 11 people to the hospital, most with gunshot wounds.
“We have confirmed that we have 11 individuals that are injured. We have mostly gunshot wounds to the legs, extremities, hands, some graze wounds,” Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said during a morning news conference.
One person was shot in the lower back. Lanier could not confirm that all 11 of the injured had been shot. Except for one 17-year-old, those hurt are adults.
Earlier Monday, Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham said one of the people wounded by gunfire was in serious condition. All of the injuries, he said, “appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.”
The shootings occurred around 2:10 a.m. in front of Tyler House Apartments in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street NW. The apartment complex is 1 mile north of the U.S. Capitol.
Lanier says a large group of people was hanging out on the corner when a dark-colored car, followed by a lighter-colored car, drove by the group. Police say those in at least one of the cars opened fire.
It’s not known yet whether anyone in the group fired back, Lanier says. The group may have been coming back from a club across the street that had closed 15 minutes earlier.
The lighter-colored car may be gray or silver, Lanier says.
Police released surveillance video of the incident showing the cars they’re seeking:
The cars were driving along the service road in front of the apartments when the shooting started. Initial reports said one of the vehicles may have been a BMW, but after reviewing surveillance video, police say that may not be the case.
Anyone who may have seen the two cars driving southbound from the scene can call police at 202-727-9099. Police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 in the case.
Lanier says police are still gathering evidence at the scene and information from witnesses.
She says it’s not yet known how many shots were fired.
