Catholic University of America was issued a permit Friday to construct a single-family “unit” at 620 Michigan Ave. NE, on its campus. New student housing? Faculty residence?
Nope. This is a mobile home, which soon after it’s built will be transported 2,700 miles across the country for the 2013 Solar Decathlon, Oct. 3-13 in Irvine, Calif.
Catholic, George Washington University and American University are collaborating as Team Capitol D.C. to bring the project, called Harvest, to Southern California. Harvest, according to the team’s website, will produce its own energy (capturing and reusing excess heat from solar panels) and collect rainwater to sustain itself and its resident, a war veteran.
The D.C. team is one of 20 participating in the decathlon.

- 522 22nd St. NW, 603 22nd St. NW, 605 22nd St. NW, 2206 F St. NW, 2208 F St. NW: George Washington University was issued permits to change the use of the homes at those addresses to fraternity-sorority houses with occupancy not to exceed six people.
- 1750 Pennsylvania Ave. NW: Vornado Realty Trust will demolish the basement-level tenant area, roughly 3,900 square feet, to make room for a fitness center, including restrooms and locker rooms.
- 1339 Kearny St. NE: A permit was issued to construct a two-story, single-family home and a basement on an empty lot.
