WASHINGTON – The bitter cold couldn’t keep mourners away Friday morning. It was a packed house for the funeral of 35-year-old Chris Yung, a Prince William County police officer killed in the line of duty.

Law enforcement officials, firefighters, friends, family and private citizens from across the region attended the services, which were held at Hylton Memorial Chapel in Woodbridge, Va.

The officer, who had been on the force for seven years, died Monday in a fiery traffic crash.

“As we give tribute to the life and service of Chris Yung, it’s become very clear and apparent the positive impact he’s had in our community,” said Chaplain Gary Caruthers as the service began.

“That was seen in the outpouring of love and compassion at the candle light vigil [Tuesday night]. It was seen again last night as almost an endless line of hundreds of people came to honor Chris.”

Prince William County Acting Police Chief Lt. Col. Barry Barnard spoke next.

“If one is to be judged by acts of kindness, not only would Chris be at the head of the class, but Chris could teach the class,” he said.

Yung’s little brother, Dale, said he was inspired by his sibling to become a police officer. He called his older brother a “hero.”

“I love and miss you,” he said. “I know you’ll always be there and have my back and keep me safe.”

Melissa Peacor, Prince William County executive said the huge turnout at the funeral proves “the support the community has for our police department.”

“It’s just so tragic,” she said. “The Yung family is just the most wonderful family and they are dedicated to public service.”

Motorcycles were flown out from Sacramento, Calif. to be part of the procession, Peacor said, adding that “it’s a great comfort to the family.”

Yung leaves behind a wife and three kids.
