Helping disabled veterans receive benefits

WASHINGTON – Help is on the way for disabled veterans having trouble navigating the Veterans Affairs benefits system.

On Wednesday, Nov.14, several attorneys will be on-hand to conduct an outreach event that will help disabled veterans, their spouses and survivors of deceased veterans understand VA benefits and how to apply for them. The event is called “Veteran Disability Benefits 101: Attorneys From NVLSP Share What You Should Know.”

“The laws are complicated,” says Ron Abrams, an attorney with the National Veterans Legal Services Program.

“People have wrong impressions about what they have to do to win. It’s our job to help as many people as we can get the benefits that they’ve actually earned.”

Abrams says he feels that with just a few minutes of talking to veterans one-on- one, the NVLSP can steer them in the right direction.

Wednesday’s event is free and will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Maryland at Anne Arundel Community College. According to Abrams, NVLSP hopes to plan similar events in Virginia.

The D.C. area has one of the highest concentrations of military veterans in the country with almost 650,000 vets living in the region.

Location:
Anne Arundel Community College
101 College Parkway
Arnold, MD 21012
