Get government property on the cheap with GSA surplus sales

WASHINGTON – Cyber Monday and Black Friday are widely known, but there’s a big sale in the D.C. area many haven’t heard of that happens twice a month on Thursdays.

It’s a sale of surplus government property put on by the General Services Administration at its Surplus Sales Center in Springfield, Va.

Members of the public can buy things like a $75 laptop, a $10 bookcase and a $2 chair.

For those who have never been to one of these sales before, here’s how today’s works:

  • It runs from 8 a.m. until noon, and everything is sold at a fixed price, on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Buyers can pay with cash, check or credit card, but anything that’s purchased has to be hauled away on the same day.
  • The sales center’s address is 6808 Loisdale Road, Building A, Suite 2, Springfield, Virginia.

The next sale is planned for Dec. 13.
