WASHINGTON – The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk to fight breast cancer raised $3.8 million dollars this year. That’s down from the more than $7 million raised last year.
The drop is likely because of the controversy earlier this year when Komen, the nation’s largest breast cancer charity, decided to stop giving grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening. That decision was reversed after three days.
The charity says that more than 1,600 people participated this year. Last year, more than 2,500 people participated in the event.
In April, organizers for the races and events said they’ve see participation in their events fall by as much as 30 percent.
Still, those that do support the organization were just as supportive as ever, wearing bright pink outfits and cheering loudly as the walkers came by.
