Pros and cons of hiring someone with a criminal record

WASHINGTON – One quarter of all Americans have a criminal record, according to national task force. And many of them are employable, yet struggling to find work in a recovering economy.

An informal panel, formed by the Job Opportunities Task Force, will meet in Rockville, Md., to discuss the benefits and challenges of hiring people with criminal backgrounds.

The panelists, many of whom work with offenders in Montgomery County, say they understand why employers may be apprehensive to hire someone who has served time.

“They want to make staffing decisions that make sense in the long-term, and avoid hiring someone who may put the company at risk,” says a news release.

The meeting will be held at the Montgomery County Pre-Release and Reentry Services building at 11651 Nebel Street in Rockville, Md., on Thursday Sept. 20 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
