WASHINGTON – There soon will be some more smiley faces in the District.
The Washington Post reports Wal-Mart will begin construction of a new store on Georgia Avenue NW next month. With construction already under way on another store off of North Capitol Street, that means two Walmarts could be open in D.C. by the end of next year.
The Post says initial plans to open four Walmarts in the District by the end of 2012 have been scaled back. Community leaders and residents unhappy with Wal-Mart’s management practices also have pushed back against the retailer.
Several of the D.C. stores are slated to be part of mixed-use developments.
