WASHINGTON – The Cannon Building was invaded by all shapes, sizes and ages of canines and cats Tuesday afternoon. Several shelters and animal rescue groups across the region showcased their dogs and cats up for adoption on the Hill.
The “Paws for Celebration” event was used to promote the adoption of shelter animals.
Congressman Jim Moran, D-Va., who sponsored the event says as many as 60 percent of shelter dogs and 80 percent of shelter cats are euthenized.
He urged people to think about saving a life from a shelter.
Laney, a 5-year-old beagle was one of the dogs on display. The dog was found wandering around with a flea collar on. Jake Easton with Homeward Trails out of Arlington says Laney is very sweet and lovable. He says she’d cuddle up with you on the couch forever. She is up for adoption.
So is 4-month-old Barkley, a spaniel beagle puppy mix. She was rescued from a shelter in West Virginia, which got overwhelmed with puppies. Barkley is now in a foster home but looking for a permanent home. She is also available through Homeward Trails.
Kaiser, a 10-year-old German shepherd male, was given up for adoption by his owners when they had children. But Dawn Lopicollo, who is fostering Kaiser, says the pooch is very good and kind with children and loves other dogs. His favorite hobby is putting his head out the window and having his belly rubbed. Kaiser can be adopted through Shepherd Rescue.org out of Sterling.
