WASHINGTON – An Oakton, Va. man who threw open his car door, ran into Interstate 66 traffic and jumped on vehicles after an accident now faces charges.
Virginia State Police Corbin G. Shannon, 21, is charged with reckless driving and destruction of property under $1,000. He is charged with being a pedestrian on the interstate and interfering with passing vehicles on a highway.
Police say around 6:14 p.m. Monday Shannon was driving a Honda in the westbound lanes of I-66 in Prince William County, just west of Exit 147. His vehicle, which had been stopped on the right shoulder, swerved into traffic and struck a cargo van. The impact sent Shannon’s Honda back off the road and into a Jersey wall, police say.
Witnesses tell police as the van’s driver went to check on the driver, Shannon jumped out of the car and ran into traffic. He jumped on four vehicles and smashed the windshield of one as he landed.
No one in the four vehicles was injured.
When a state trooper arrived a few minutes after the accident, Shannon was standing on the left shoulder. He was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital, where he was held overnight for observation, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
Geller says the investigation has ruled out alcohol and illegal drugs as factors in what happened.
Westbound I-66 was shut down for about 30 minutes.
