WASHINGTON – It is the newest technology in personal safety. Volvo is developing a pedestrian airbag that deploys outside the car when a person is hit.
Sensors in the Volvo V40’s front bumper register if there is physical contact between a car and the pedestrian, according to Volvo engineers.
As soon as those sensors register an impact in the bumper of the car, the airbag deploys where a person would likely hit the vehicle – along the top of the hood and windshield of the car.
