WASHINGTON – For the first time in history, travelers may soon be able to fly nonstop from San Francisco International Airport to Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Virgin America, the only major airline headquartered in California, recently filed an application for the right to serve its home base of San Francisco with two nonstop daily flights to D.C.
“The move to open up service to DCA by the Department of Transportation is to be applauded, and we hope that we can provide meaningful low-fare competition on the route so that local travelers and businesses can enjoy lower fares and more choice,” said David Cush, president and CEO of Virgin America, in a news release.
Supporters of Virgin America say that the nonstop route would make things easier for business fliers and make flights between both places more affordable for everyone.
Virgin America’s goal is to start providing the nonstop service by summer 2012. The airline proposes providing flights that are convenient in the morning and afternoon.
Currently, Virgin America offers flights to 16 locations in the United States and Mexico.
On April 4, 2012 the airline will begin to offer nonstop flights from Los Angeles International Airport to Philadelphia International Airport.
