WASHINGTON – Maybe yours was penned by Dr. Seuss, or featured a “wild rumpus” with the “wild things.” Or maybe it was about a caterpillar with a huge appetite, or a bunny bidding goodnight to all.
Everyone has a favorite children’s book, one that brings back memories of being tucked in or transported to another place and time.
Now, you can find out if your top kid’s tale made the cut. Scholastic Parent & Child magazine has released a list of the “100 Greatest Books for Kids” — rankings that the mag’s editor in chief tells USA Today should generate “controversy and conversation.”
The top dog — er, spider? — on the list is E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web,” followed by the bedtime classic “Goodnigh Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown.
The list was formed out of 500 nominations made by literacy experts and “mom bloggers,” USA Today says. The magazine’s editors then made the final cuts.
Among the decisions that may spark debate are placing J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” at No. 6, and omitting the good doctor’s “The Cat in the Hat.”
