Fire evacuates Anacostia Senior High School Friday

WASHINGTON – Anacostia Senior High School in Southeast D.C. was evacuated following a rooftop fire on Friday afternoon.

D.C. Fire and EMS was called to the school at 1601 16th St. SE around 11:45 a.m. after a fire broke out in a vacant area where renovations were being done. Construction crews say there was a large stack of plywood and some insulation that ignited, which they were unable to extinguish, in part due to the wind.

No students were injured.

Two firefighters incurred minor injuries when a portion of the roof gave out and a firefighter fell through, landing on another firefighter, D.C. EMS says.

Two civilians were evaluated by EMS on the scene, neither had serious injuries.

Students at the school were evacuated around noon. None were in the building in the area of the fire, officials say.

The fire department, located near the school, was quick to respond to the blaze and no severe damages have been reported.
