WASHINGTON — The Penn State creamery that distributes more than 4.5 million pounds of ice cream has stopped serving the flavor named after accused former coach Jerry Sandusky, according to an independent college newspaper.
“Sandusky Blitz,” a banana-flavored ice cream with chocolate-coverered peanuts and caramel, is no longer on the Penn State Berkey Creamery website or menu, reports The Daily Collegian.
The creamery is directing all media requests to the university general communications office. WTOP inquiries there were not immediately returned.
Staff Assistant Naomi Minarchick could not confirm the process by which the creamery names its flavors, the Collegian reports. The website says the homages “pay tribute to Penn State faculty who have made outstanding contributions to higher education.”
The demand for the flavor skyrocketed last weekend, USA Today reports, with a line at the creamery stretching around the block.
The move comes the same day head coach Joe Paterno — who had been grooming Sandusky as his replacement, and allegedly had knowledge of the defensive coordinator’s accused sexual misconduct — canceled his weekly news conference before the university’s upcoming game against Nebraska.
A grand jury has charged Sandusky with sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period. A report released Saturday says the former coach, who retired in 1999, was banned from holding youth sports camps on campus in 2002, a year after a graduate student claimed to see him assault a child in a locker room shower.
