WASHINGTON — You may never drive over the speed limit, but if you do, there’s a scam making the rounds you should know about. It involves an email notice that you’ve gotten a speed camera ticket.
The subject line reads, “Your fine for speeding.” The email gives a case number and states you’re guilty of negligent driving in Rockville, Maryland, and you can click on a link of the photo proof.
But Montgomery County police said it’s a scam.
“We don’t send our civil citations for speed camera enforcement or red light enforcement via email,” said police Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti. “We don’t ask for money via email. It always is going to be sent through postal mail.”
Another sign the email is a scam is that it states the “amount due” is $535.99 when fines for Maryland speed camera violations can’t exceed $40.
If you ever are suspicious about some interaction allegedly involving police, Innocenti said you can always verify with the police department.
“Ask them if there’s a number that you can call them back at. You can hang up, call the main number to a police department (or) police station and verify that information,” Innocenti said.
This scam is apparently making the rounds and was detected in March in the area of South Windsor, Connecticut.
