Target opens small-scale Bethesda location

BETHESDA, Md. — A new small-scale Target store just opened its doors this week in Bethesda.

The 35,000 square-foot, two-level store is in the Shops of Wisconsin, on Wisconsin Avenue, which already houses a Trader Joe’s.

Although it’s only about a third of the size of a typical Target, the store is loaded with items customers want, a store official said.

“We have a full grocery selection; we have all apparel, which [is] not usual for flexible-format stores,” the store’s Diana Keeler told WTOP.

She said customers who have visited so far are impressed: “I think they’re just shocked to see that we’re actually able to carry as much as we do, knowing that it is a small location.”

Keeler said they expect most of their customers to walk to the store rather than drive, and because of that, some items are missing.

“There are some larger items that we don’t carry, so we don’t have bicycles, and we don’t have large furniture,” she said.

The store does include a Starbucks and a CVS Pharmacy.

The Bethesda location is the largest of the three smaller-scale Target stores around the region; the other two are in College Park and Rosslyn.

A grand opening celebration at the Bethesda Target is set for Sunday.
