WASHINGTON — A person who died in a small aircraft crash in Montgomery County has been identified Thursday.
William Hughes, 78, was the pilot and also the only person inside the plane that crashed on Tuesday, police said.
The single-engine plane crash happened on Laytonsville Road in an off-road field near the intersection with Hawkins Creamery Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland, around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer.
The intersection is near Davis Airport, a small, privately-owned airport.
The aircraft, which is described as Cessna Style, caught fire upon impact and fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The cause of the crash is not yet clear. Montgomery County police are investigating the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have been notified of the crash and are investigating.
