ROCKVILLE, Md. — The Montgomery County council has introduced a bill to make sure that when contractors say they’re paying their workers a living wage, that’s what the workers get.
Bill 43-15 will require businesses that contract with the county to maintain payroll records for three years, and that they make those records available to the Office of Procurement for review.
The living wage in Montgomery County is $14.35 an hour. In a case reported in The Washington Post in May, employees for Camco, a firm based in Gaithersburg, claimed they were being shorted in their paychecks, alleging that deductions by the employer brought their hourly rate well below the county’s living wage requirement.
Council member Nancy Navarro is a co-sponsor of the new bill.
“Hopefully it will protect people who are working so hard every day and who expect to be paid a living wage,” she says.
