Accused Rockville killer being held without bond

WASHINGTON —  The man who confessed to police during his Alaskan cruise vacation that he killed his Rockville, Maryland, neighbors appeared in Montgomery County court Monday where a judge ordered him held without bond.

Scott Tomaszewski, 31, was arrested May 17 in Juneau, Alaska, as he returned to dock from a whale watching boat ride, and exactly one week after he was accused of killing his neighbors, Richard and Juliane Vilardo.

Tomaszewski was on an Alaskan cruise with his parents and his sister. Police say among the evidence recovered was bloodstained money from his wallet.

Although Tomaszewski never fought extradition, his return to Maryland was delayed several days by the Memorial Day holiday.

“This is going along in a very orderly fashion. We have been keeping the family informed, they know exactly what’s going on, they know what the timetable is,” says Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

Tomaszewski appeared in Montgomery County District Court via a video teleconference Monday morning. His preliminary hearing has been set for June 26, 2015.

While police say Tomaszewski admitted to the Mother’s Day killings, investigators continue their work.

“The police remain involved, the forensic people remain involved, sifting through the physical evidence and that will go on for months,” McCarthy says.

The bodies of Richard, 65, and Julianne, 67, were found at their Rockville home on Mother’s Day.

The same day, Tomaszewski posted on his Facebook page, “My deepest sympathies go out to our neighbors who were found deceased today. I can’t imagine who would do this.”
