Fatal crash on the beltway closes 2 lanes of traffic

WASHINGTON — A Silver Spring man is dead after a crash on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway Saturday morning.

At around 4:30 a.m., Maryland State police, College Park Barrack, responded to the crash on the Beltway just before the US Route 50 ramp in New Carrollton in Prince George’s County.

Kwesi Kwaasi, 37, of Silver Spring, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a 2015 Freightliner box truck struck Kwaasi’s vehicle, a 2006 Acura TL, after he changed lanes in front of the truck.

The driver of the box truck, 27-year-old Christopher Simpson of Suitland, was not injured.

Police said there was no indication of alcohol on either driver.

State Highway Administration closed two lanes of traffic for about three hours following the crash.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the crash, but believe unsafe lane change and failure to yield the right of way were contributing factors.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact 301-345-3101.
