NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Three men are charged in a computer hacking and spamming scheme that federal prosecutors in New Jersey say compromised the personal information of 60 million people.
The indictment released Tuesday charges 30-year-old Timothy Livingston of Boca Raton, Florida, 32-year-old Tomasz Chmielarz of Rutherford, New Jersey, and 27-year-old Devin McArthur of Ellicott City, Maryland, with conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Livingston and Chmielarz also are charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with electronic mail.
Prosecutors say Livingston operated a business that sent “spam” emails on behalf of clients. In 2012, prosecutors say he solicited Chmielarz to write computer programs to bypass spam filters.
McArthur is accused of helping to steal confidential business information.
The names of the companies were not released.
