WASHINGTON — Former Montgomery County Council member Valerie Ervin is the latest candidate to run for the Maryland congressional seat of Rep. Chris Van Hollen, who now running for U.S. Senate.
Ervin, a Democrat who has served on the Montgomery County Board of Education, released a video announcing her candidacy on Wednesday. It includes diverse people speaking out on her behalf and touts her support for raising the minimum wage.
Ervin is one of six candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the 8th Congressional District seat. Van Hollen is vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Senate seat of retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski. Van Hollen and Mikulski are both Democrats.
Other announced candidates in the congressional race include: state Sen. Jamie Raskin; Delegates. Ana Sol Gutierrez and Kumar Barve; former WJLA anchor Kathleen Matthews; and Will Jawando, a former aide in the Obama administration.
