1 killed after hitting backhoe in Loudoun Co.

WASHINGTON — A Harpers Ferry woman was killed on Route 7 in Loudoun County Monday night after she rear-ended a backhoe, Virginia State Police said.

Geneva Owens, 18, was driving a Toyota Matrix west near Hidden Gap Road when she hit the backhoe, which was travelign in the right lane, according to state police.

Owens died at the scene. The driver of the backhoe was not injured.

Road conditions were slick at the time of the 7 p.m. wreck as the evening rain began to freeze on cold pavement and slushy roads.

Two other drivers were killed in crashes statewide during Monday’s snow and freezing rain storm. A Linden, Virginia, man was killed in a crash in Fauquier County Monday morning and Monday evening one person was killed in Chesterfield County.
