Military air exercise over DC area scheduled for early Wednesday

WASHINGTON — Expect some military aircraft noise around the region early Wednesday morning.

Weather permitting, several training flights are scheduled from around midnight to 2:30 a.m. Wednesday as part of a NORAD and Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR) exercise.

Civil Air Patrol C-182 aircraft and a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter will participate in Exercise Falcon Virgo 17-08. It’s designed “to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations as well as operationally test the NCR Visual Warning System and training personnel at the [Joint Air Defense Operations Center],” according to CONR.

The training flights are being held in coordination with the FAA, the National Capital Region Coordination Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center and the Western Air Defense Sector.

If weather isn’t favorable early Wednesday, CONR said, the exercise will be held the following morning.
