WASHINGTON — Free cab rides home are available in the D.C. area through New Year’s to help keep impaired drivers off the road.
Rides of up to 30 miles are free between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. That covers at least two hours after last call in most D.C. bars, said Kurt Gregory Erickson, president of WRAP, the nonprofit organization conducting the region’s “SoberRide” effort.
“I think the number is easy to remember, 1-800-200-TAXI,” Erickson said.
Other numbers Erickson would like you to program into your phone would help you report suspected drunken drivers. In D.C. and Maryland, you can dial 911. In Virginia, authorities encourage motorists to report aggressive and reckless drivers to Virginia State Police by dialing #77.
Erickson said party hosts can help prevent drunken driving numbers of ways:
- Serve high protein meats and cheeses that take longer to digest
- Cut off alcohol supplies before the party ends
- Designate a bartender to prevent over imbibing
- Avoid serving punch with a carbonated base that can quicken alcohol absorption
- Call “SoberRide” for someone who shouldn’t drive
A survey of local men 21-35 years old showed they believe the No. 1 choice for combating drunken driving is by designating a driver. But, Erickson said only 59 percent say they plan ahead in order to do that.
“If you’re going out for the evening, put it into your phone, 1-800-200-TAXI,” Erickson advised. “It could be a lifesaving move on your part.”
