UPDATE 10:26 a.m. 5/19/2015: Metro says that trains are no longer single-tracking; normal service has been restored.
EARLIER: WASHINGTON — Metro faced another passel of problems on the Red Line Tuesday morning.
Trains are single-tracking between Medical Center and Friendship Heights, after they had been temporarily suspended, following a fire department response to a report of a track fire. The Bethesda station, which was temporarily closed, has reopened, but only DC-bound trains are stopping there. Metro says that passengers heading from D.C. to Bethesda should go on to Medical Center, then get on an inbound train back to Bethesda.
Metro adds that shuttle buses, which were taking riders between Medical Center and Friendship Heights during the suspension, are still running between the two stations for waiting passengers.
A listener says that “the domino effect” is causing backups and delays for inbound trains as far out as Rhode Island Avenue.
The entrance escalators were out of service at Wheaton due to water damage, Metro says; they were fixed as of 8:10 a.m.
