Police: Man confesses to ‘Black Hat Bandit’ robberies

WASHINGTON – Police say a 66-year-old man has confessed to being part of a group of robbers who have struck nine banks in the region this year.

NBC Washington reports that Thomas George was arrested and charged with robbing a bank on Connecticut Avenue in Northwest D.C. on March 13. After he was arrested, he confessed to being one of the ‘Black Hat Bandits,’ responsible for six bank robberies in Virginia and two in Maryland this year.

Court documents say that George and an accomplice threatened customers and made off with about $9,000 from the Connecticut Avenue bank, and had about $4,000 in cash on him when he was arrested later that day at an apartment on 19th Place in Southeast.

Dewitt Hall, also of Southeast, was also arrested in the Connecticut Avenue robbery. NBC Washington says it’s not known whether he was linked to the others.
