WASHINGTON — Cold weather around the D.C. region is responsible for hundreds of recent water main breaks.
According to Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, crews have fixed more than 200 pipes this past week alone.
“The extended cold snap is proving to be brutal,” says WSSC spokeswoman Lyn Riggins.
“WSSC has seen a total of 365 broken water mains since Feb. 1,” she adds.
In Virginia, Arlington County officials say there have been 35 to 40 water main breaks over the past week.
At least two of those caused extensive damage to roadways, leading to holes and deep cracks in the pavement.
