WASHINGTON — High school football season is in full swing, which means it’s time for the return of the DMV High School Game of the Week. We won’t have a game every week the rest of the way, but when we do, we’ll ask you to vote between several options to tell us which matchup you’d like to see us cover.
For our first game of 2016, we’re headed to Rock Creek Park on the campus of St. John’s College High School Saturday at 2 p.m. for the Cadets’ WCAC opener against Good Counsel. This promises to be a barnburner rematch of last year’s 29-23, triple overtime victory by St. John’s.
St. John’s (3-1) challenged themselves with one of the toughest non-conference slates of any high school in the country, beating Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic and Montvale, New Jersey’s St. Joseph Regional — both top 60 teams nationally — before falling on the road at No. 2 IMG Academy last weekend. With their annual battle against DeMatha due up next week in Hyattsville, the Cadets can’t afford to look past Good Counsel.
The Falcons (3-0) have notched a trio of low-scoring road wins by a combined 10 points and have yet to put more than 24 points on the board. Their three opponents are 5-1 in their other games, including a quartet of blowout victories. Amazingly, Good Counsel won’t play a home game until mid-October, so the road environment shouldn’t be an issue.
WTOP will have live updates, photos, videos and interviews from the campus of St. John’s Saturday afternoon.
Our next Game of the Week will be the first weekend of October. We have a couple of games already on the radar, but if you’d like to submit a suggestion, you can email me or do so in the comments below.
