It's not all about chunky knits and crunchy leaves: Fall is the prime time for pumpkins. Here are a few D.C.-area pumpkin patches to visit in the new season.
Great Country Farms
This spot in Loudoun County, Virginia, has pick-your-own pumpkins and apples through the month of October. The farm’s market sells local honey, jams and freshly baked goods, and the concession stand serves cider doughnuts and made-to-order flat bread pizzas.

Cox Farms
Cox Farms is so much more than a pumpkin patch. Located in Centreville, Virginia, it hosts a fall festival complete with hayrides, slides, animals, live entertainment, food, and yes, pumpkins. The pumpkins aren’t pick-your-own, but there are plenty from which to choose.

Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch
In Middletown, Maryland, Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch has acres of pick-your-own pumpkins — plus a 15-acre corn maze, a petting zoo, hayrides and a 3,000-square-foot “craft attic” stocked with homemade goods for sale. The 2018 season runs Sept. 22 to Oct. 31.

The Corn Maze in The Plains
Out at The Plains in Fauquier County, Virginia, visitors will find a corn maze, hayrides, farm animals, a pumpkin patch (promising thousands of pumpkins), games and more. The fall festival, which runs Sept. 22 to Nov. 4, is $11 for general admission.

Butler’s Orchard
Tuesdays through Fridays, from Oct. 2 to Nov. 2, Butler’s Orchard offers “pumpkin harvest days ,” where visitors can explore the farm’s learning stations, wander through the straw maze and pick a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch — all for $7.50. The Germantown, Maryland, farm also celebrates the fall season with its Pumpkin Festival . Expect hayrides, a jump in the hay loft, giant slides, caramel apples and more. Admission to the festival is $12.

Wayside Farm
Enjoy pig races, a goat walk, playgrounds, a jumping pillow and pick your own pumpkin in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Berryville, Virginia. You can also partake in the corn maze (similar to last year’s portrait of Kirk Cousins above). Food and farm-related gifts are also available. General admission is $10; free for kids 2 and younger.

Montpelier Farms
Montpelier Farms’ fall festival runs Sept. 15 to Nov. 4. Attractions at the Upper Marlboro, Maryland, site include a corn maze, face painting, hayrides, straw art and more. The pumpkin patch is pick-your-own, and all pumpkins under 5 pounds are $3. Festival admission is $12.

On weekends in the fall, Rock Hill Orchard in northern Montgomery County, Maryland, opens its pumpkin field for visitors . There are also two corn mazes, a pumpkin cannon and pick-your-own apples. Craving something sweet? Stop by Woodbourne Creamery at Rock Hill Orchard for ice cream made right there on the farm.
