Valentine’s ideas, events for kids in DC area

WASHINGTON — Sure, chocolates are delicious and cards are nice, but nothing beats quality time with the ones you love.

This Valentine’s Day, treat your little sweethearts to a special outing. Red Tricycle’s Guiomar Ochoa shares a few ideas with holiday-themed events happening in the D.C. area:

Valentine’s Day baking at Williams Sonoma Kids ages 5 to 13 can get creative in the kitchen at Williams Sonoma’s Bethesda, Maryland, location on Saturday, Feb. 10. There, they’ll learn the ins-and-outs of making — and eating — sweet treats for the holiday. “It’s kind of a nice way for the kids to make something and give it to their parents, or give it to their friends or siblings,” Ochoa said. D.C. libraries get crafty D.C.’s public libraries are hosting a number of Valentine-themed classes and workshops for Washingtonians of all ages. Some sessions include making valentines for veterans, crafting cards and even sewing heart-shaped elbow patches onto worn sweaters. Cold heart? Warm it up — on ice For a fun wintertime activity, check out the National Gallery of Art’s ice skating rink. When it’s time to warm up, an on-site cafe provides provisions — including hot chocolate. Kids can add different flavors into their cocoa, and adults can add a little something, as well. “They even have little spritz of alcohol that the parents can add,” Ochoa said. “So this is a really fun activity. Pinkies up: Treat the kids to tea For a memorable afternoon outing, treat the kids to tea at Georgetown’s Lady Camellia Pastry and Tea Room. Ochoa said the outpost offers a children’s tea menu — complete with scones, pastries and kid-approved sandwiches (grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and Nutella). “It doesn’t take long and it really makes them feel special. Curtains up! Get dressed up and take the kids to a live performance. Ochoa recommends the Bollywood-inspired adaptation of Mark Twain’s “The Princess and the Pauper” at Imagination Stage. The show starts Feb. 10 and runs through March 18. Also coming to town on Valentine’s Day is Disney’s Frozen on Ice at Capital One Arena.
