Ikea stuffs new pillows with old catalogs

WASHINGTON — Even if you didn’t order anything from last year’s Ikea catalog, the annual,  full-color, 300-plus-page paper edition can be put to good use.

Ikea will use shredded, recycled catalogs as stuffing in a new cushion, designed by Charles Kaisin.

Customers in Belgium have until Sept. 12 to bring their catalogs into any Belgian store. The shredded paper will be transformed into filling for the Kuss cushion.

According to the advertising agency behind Ikea’s recycled pillow, designer Charles Kaisin’s print originated with recycling: “I drew the design inspiration from the cellulose molecule, the natural raw material of paper pulp. Styled and repeated into a visual structure it becomes its very own source of inspiration.”

The new use of old catalogs comes as Ikea introduces this year’s paper version. The 2016 catalog can also be viewed online.
