Authorities ID missing swimmer at Maryland park as search resumes

WASHINGTON — Maryland Natural Resources Police resumed their search for a missing swimmer at Patapsco Valley State Park Monday morning.

Police tweeted shortly before 11 a.m. that dive teams were beginning their search at Bloede Dam for Byron Diaz, 22, of Landover, Maryland.

Natural Resources police were originally called around 6:30 p.m. Sunday to search for a man who dove into the waters below the Dam.

Candy Thomson, a spokeswoman for Maryland Natural Resources Police, says witnesses did not see the man come back up.

Maryland Park Service and Howard County Fire and Rescue crews joined in the search for the swimmer until it got dark.

Thomson said the dam area is well-marked with signs telling visitors to not swim, as well as indicating that it is a “very treacherous” area. At this time, officials have not released any information about who the man was with when he went into the water.
