BUCKEYSTOWN, Maryland — An ATV crashed head-on into an SUV Monday afternoon in Frederick County, Maryland, leaving one ATV rider dead and another critically hurt.
Two people in the SUV — a woman and her 12-year-old son — also were hurt. Their injuries are nonlife-threatening, according to authorities.
Two people were on the ATV when it “crossed the centerline at a high rate of speed and struck an SUV dead on,” said Cpl. Amanda Ensor of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened on Michaels Mill Road between Md. 85 and Md. 80 in the Adamstown area around 2:45 p.m.
“One of the riders did go through the windshield of the SUV,” Ensor said.
“The other one went actually over the vehicle, toward the rear of it.”
That person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other person riding the ATV was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Shock Trauma Center in critical condition.
It’s unclear who was driving the ATV.
“Surrounding the four wheeler and the car there were other articles of clothing, and in addition to that there were several beer cans, and it looked like what appeared to be possibly a case of beer,” Ensor said.
Investigators said it is not clear whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
